Hotel Review: Paris Boutik “La Librairie du Marais”

When I think of Paris, I think of the different districts, the many different corners full of the little things that make every street unique. In my opinion Paris is not a city to rush through from sight to sight – you actually have to take time and enjoy every facet possible  to actually experience the vibe and specialty of France’s capital.

During my March trip to Paris I got to stay two nights at the concept hotel Paris Boutik. Let’s start by introducing you to the concept behind “La Librairie du Marais”.

Wenn ich an Paris denke, denke ich an die verschiedenen Stadtteile, die verschiedenen Straßenecken, die durch eine Ansammlung von Details einzigartig sind. Meiner Meinung nach ist Paris keine Stadt, die man schnell einmal abklappern kann und dann kennt. Man muss sich Zeit nehmen und jede Facette der Stadt kennenlernen um die tatsächliche Atmosphäre der französischen Hauptstadt wahrzunehmen.

Während meines Trips im März nach Paris, durfte ich zwei Nächte im Concept Hotel Paris Boutik wohnen. Heute möchte ich euch das Konzept der “La Librairie du Marais” genauer vorstellen.

INTERIOR: As the name already suggests it is inspired by libraries. The first thing that struck my eye when I looked at the hotel was the incredible interior that is furnished with shelves of books that reach way up to the ceiling that is detailed with wooden bars. The suite is set in colors of dusty petrol blue, and shades of beige, grey and white. Staying in that classy color palette, Paris Boutik manages to combine structures and furniture that looks like it was carefully chosen over years of heritage. Stone walls and a small round table with ornaments and granite patterned surface flanked by two different padded chairs, next to a paisley carpet, rectangular wooden couch table, a simple couch and a black and white gallery wall. The bathroom is modern but has a big mirror with  flower ornaments. A wild mixture that works out perfectly well in the all over atmosphere of the suite. It is charming and comfortable and felt immediately like an upgraded version of home!

DEKORATION: Wie der Name es schon andeutet, ist das Hotel von einer Bibliothek inspiriert. Das erste was mir vom Hotel ins Auge stach und in Erinnerung blieb, war die unfassbare Zimmerdekoration. Das Zimmer ist mit Regalen voller Bücher bestückt, die bis zur Zimmerdecke reichen, die im übrigen mit groben Holz Pfählen dekoriert sind. Die Farbpalette reicht von einem milchigem Petrol Blau zu Beige, Grau und Weiß Tönen. Indem sie in diesem zurückhaltend elegantem Farbschema bleiben, schafft Paris Boutik es stattdessen sich in Strukturen auszutoben. Steinwände und ein kleiner reich verzierter runder Tisch, flankiert von zwei unterschiedlichen gepolsterten Stühlen neben einem Paisley Teppich, eckigem Holz Couchtisch, einer minimalistischen Couch und einer schwarz-weißen Galerie Wand. Die Möbel sehen aus als wären sie die wertvollsten Erbstücke, die über Generationen angesammelt und in neuen Kontext gesetzt wurden. Das Bad ist modern, wird allerdings durch den großen Spiegel mit  Blumen Ornamenten gebrochen. Ein wilder Mix, der insgesamt eine tolle Atmosphäre erzeugt. Das Hotelzimmer ist charmant und komfortabel und fühlt sich direkt an wie eine luxuriöse Version des eigenen Zuhauses.

THE FEATURES: Equipment-wise I would describe Paris Boutik as a fusion between conventional luxury hotels and a holiday flat rent. While the furnishing and possible service is as luxurious and high standard as in a hotel, it also features a small kitchen space and can be practically seen as a whole 45 square meter apartment. Well actually it is just that, no reception hall or anything. You are greeted by a “house-sitter” at communicated arrival time, who is then always available via phone in needs of anything throughout the stay. The suite includes all essentials we love such as Wifi, a safe, bathtub,  a huge flatscreen tv and my favorite gadget is the Bose sound system. Life is so much better when music can be played at best sound quality. Though the kitchen is not a whole cooking area and only features a microwave, small coffee machine, kettle, refrigerator and basic tableware. Personally I would have also wished for a cooking stove to be able to actually cook a meal at “home” since the thought of microwave food kind of speaks against the luxury standards stated earlier.

DIE AUSSTATTUNG: Was die Einrichtung angeht, würde ich Paris Boutik als eine Fusion  aus konventionellem Luxushotel und Ferienapartment beschreiben. Die Möblierung und optionaler Service sind qualitativ so hoch wie im Hotel standardisiert. Der Unterschied ist, dass noch eine kleine Küchenecke integriert ist und die Librairie Suite im Grunde ein eigenständiges 45 Quadratmeter Apartment ist. Es gibt keine Rezeption oder ähnliches. Man wird zur vorher kommunizierten Ankunft von einem “House Sitter” begrüßt, der einem alle wichtigen Infos kurz erklärt und dann bei jeglichen Problemen oder Fragen jederzeit erreichbar ist. Die Suite beinhaltet einige tolle Gadgets – es gibt Wifi, eine Badewanne, einen großen Flatscreen Fernseher und mein Favorit: ein Bose Sound System. Das Leben ist doch so viel schöner, wenn Musik in großartiger Sound Qualität abgespielt wird. Dafür ist die Küche nicht komplett ausgestattet. Es gibt eine Mikrowelle, eine kleine Kaffeemaschine, einen Wasserkocher, einen Kühlschrank und Basic Geschirr und Besteck. Ich hätte mir persönlich schon gerne noch einen Herd gewünscht, damit man “zu Hause” auch eine richtige Mahlzeit zubereiten kann. Der Gedanke an Mikrowellen Essen spricht nämlich gegen die luxuriöse Umgebung. 

SERVICE: So instead we followed the selected restaurant advice that was presented to us prior to arrival (they even put together a patisserie and sweets guide for me – since I requested some tipps for my Sweets on Sunday category). Paris Boutik would not be a proper hotel without room service though. And having breakfast in the room or in a hotel in general is one of my favorite perks. Fortunately Paris Boutik works with the Paris Breakfast company that delivers a set of Parisian breakfast right to your door. You can add the service to your booking or just go outside and find one of the sweet cafés around. Testing the service we got a package of 2 croissants, 2 chocolate bread, 2 small fresh orange juices and 2 medium cups of coffee (or tea if wished for instead) for our first morning. While it is convenient and perfect for a lazy morning, I would suggest to rather go outside and enjoy some fresh air while you are at it.

SERVICE: Stattdessen folgten wir also den Restaurant Tipps, die uns im Vorfeld vom Hotel vorschlagen wurden (sie haben mir sogar extra eine Liste an Patisserien und Süßigkeiten Geschäften für meine Sweets und Sunday Kategorie zusammen gestellt). Paris Boutik wäre aber kein richtiges Hotel, wenn es nicht auch einen Zimmerservice anbieten würde. Vor allem Hotelfrühstück ist doch immer ein Grund zur Vorfreude. Deshalb arbeiten sie mit dem dem Unternehmen Paris Breakfast zusammen, das ein typisch französisches Frühstückspaket direkt an die Zimmertür liefert. Man kann den Service auf Wunsch dazu buchen oder eben vor die Tür spazieren und eines der Cafés in näherer Umgebung ausprobieren. An unserem ersten Morgen durften wir Paris Breakfast testen und bekamen 2 Croissants, 2 Schokobrötchen, 2 kleine Becher frischen Orangensaft und 2 Kaffee (oder auf Wunsch stattdessen Tee). Super und auch lecker für einen faulen Start in den Morgen, aber ich würde doch empfehlen draußen gleichzeitig mit dem Frühstück, Pariser Atmosphäre zu erleben.

CON: As there is one quite important negative point that goes unnoticed in the evenings but is quite a said fact for the day hours: there is no real option of a daylight window. The Librairie suite has one rather small actual window that goes to a narrow back house wall but you can get some air in through it. The only option of daylight comes through the window wall next to the bed. Sounds good at first but a the suite is located on ground floor, opening up the curtains means opening up to everyone that happens to walk by the street. I mean it is a rather empty side street but still we decided to not take the risks of strangers watching straight into the bedroom. That being the only bummer though and as said you wouldn’t notice in the evening anyway. When the curtains are closed you might aswell be in the 10th floor of a high building.

CON: Denn es gibt ein relativ wichtigen negativen Punkt. Abends bleibt er ziemlich unbeachtet aber in den Tageslicht Stunden ein Manko: es gibt keine wirklich gute Option für Tageslicht. Die Librairie Suite hat ein richtiges kleines Fenster, das in eine schmale Ecke im Innenhof zeigt. Es ist jedoch direkt von der nächsten Wand geblockt, wodurch es eher der frischen Luft dient und nicht als Lichtquelle. Tageslicht bekäme man durch die Fensterfront an der Seite des Bettes. Klingt gut, läge die Suite nicht im Erdgeschoss und das Fenster ein tatsächliches Schaufenster. Die Vorhänge zu öffnen, hieße jedem Passanten Einblick in die Wohnsituation zu gewähren. Auch wenn es eine sehr ruhige Straße ist, müssen fremde Blicke dann doch nicht sein. Sobald man aber die dicken Vorhänge vorzieht, könnte man durch die hervorragende Isolation genauso gut im 10. Stock eines Hochhauses sein.

THE AREA: Paris Boutik is located in the North of the Marais district. A great location that is versatile, pretty and seemingly authentic Parisian (I am not the best person to judge just yet, since I haven’t spent enough genuine living time in Paris). There are not too many tourists around but the metro line going straight to Trocadero is just a 7 minute walk away. There is a supermarket just a few meters down the street if you want to make use of the kitchen area and the fashion boutique TREVOR in the parallel street with which Paris Boutik collaborates, was happy to store our luggage before check-in and after check-out.

DIE UMGEBUNG: Die Paris Boutik Suite liegt im Norden des Marais Viertels. Eine tolle Location, die vielseitig, hübsch und authentisch ist ohne zu viel Touristen Ansturm zu beherbergen. Die Metro Linie zum Trocadero wäre aber auch nur 7 Minuten Fußweg entfernt. Es gibt einen Supermarkt einige Meter die Straße runter, sollte der Wunsch bestehen die Küchenecke auszunutzen. Die TREVOR Boutique in der Parallelstraße kollaboriert mit Paris Boutik und hat gerne unser Gepäck vor dem Check-In und nach dem Check-Out gelagert.

FACTS:

• The book selection includes all genres and many topics but are all in French. It was definitely a good opportunity to refresh my French skills. I fell in love with the French version of “The Devil wears Prada” and a small booklet about the technique of dance. Turns out I still understand a lot when reading. Thus my company and I stayed in, cuddled in thick blankets and browsing through the library both evenings – like real nerdy bookworms.
• No fear of loosing the key. You reach the suite through two full electronic door systems that work with pin codes.
• The Librairie suite is laid out for 2 people but it is also possible to book it for 4 people. The couch would then be transformed into a second double bed. Thus it is a great option for both a romantic trip with your boyfriend, a family trip or my favorite option: girls trip! Why not take your three besties for a fashionable trip to Paris. The suite is perfectly equipped for an epic sleepover session.
• And of course very instagrammable! 😉

FACTS:

• Die Buch Auswahl hat viele Genre und Themen, sind jedoch alle in französischer Sprache. Es war für mich auf jeden Fall eine gute Möglichkeit meine Französisch Kenntnisse aufzufrischen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass ich es gelesen doch noch ganz gut verstehe. Ich habe mich in die französische Version von “Der Teufel trägt Prada” und in ein Booklet zum Thema Tanz Techniken verliebt. Meine Begleitung und ich blieben sogar beide Abende im Hotel um uns unter dicken Decken durch die Bücher zu stöbern – wie echt nerdige Bücherwürmer. 
• Keine Angst den Schlüssel zu verlieren. Man erreicht die Suite nämlich über zwei komplett elektronische Türen, die man mit Pin Codes betätigt. 
• Die Librairie Suite ist für 2 Personen ausgelegt. Man kann sie allerdings auch für 4 Personen buchen – in dem Fall wird dann die Couch zum zweiten Bett ausgezogen. Es ist also eine tolle Option für einen romantischen Trip mit dem Freund, aber auch für einen Familien Urlaub. Mein Tipp ist aber folgender: Girls Time! Nehmt euch eure 3 besten Freundinnen an die Hand und ab nach Paris. Die Suite ist nämlich perfekt für den Sleep Over des Jahres ausgestattet. 
• Und natürlich ist die Librairie Suite sehr gutes Instagram Material! 😉

ALL IN ALL: The comfort and privacy at Paris Boutik exceeds normal hotels whereas the luxurious standards can not be found at any flat booking website. The detailed interior is incredible and the location is well chosen in a quiet street of the popular Marais district. The lack of a proper daylight source is compensated by the overall full equipped suite (I mean you should be strolling the streets of Paris anyway at day time instead of sitting around in your hotel room).
I would definitely choose to stay at Paris Boutik again. There is no place like home but Paris Boutik managed to come as close as it is possible for a two night stay. La Librairie Suite is a unique place that completes the atmosphere of a Paris experience.

FAZIT: Der Komfort und die Privatsphäre im Paris Boutik Hotel übertrifft normale Hotel, die luxuriöse Ausstattung bleibt jedoch bestehen und kann so nicht auf Ferien Apartment Buchungsseiten gefunden werden. Die detaillierte Einrichtung ist ein Traum und die Location ist auf einer ruhigen Straße im beliebten Marais Viertel gut gewählt. Der Mangel an Tageslicht wird durch andere Gadgets wieder ausgeglichen (ich meine bei Tageslicht sollte man sowieso lieber durch die Straßen von Paris schlendern als im Hotelzimmer herumzusitzen).
Ich würde mich auf jeden Fall wieder zur Paris Boutik zurückkehren. Man sagt es gibt keinen Ort wie zu Hause, aber Paris Boutik kommt dem so Nahe wie es in zwei Übernachtungen eben geht. Die Librairie Suite ist eine schöne Ergänzung zur Paris Erfahrung.

EDIT:
After writing the article, I was told by the Paris Boutik team that the window system is constructed in a way that people outside can’t see inside unless they stick their noses to the window, which doesn’t happen very often. My house sitter must have forgotten to tell me.

Nach dem Verfassen des Artikels, wurde mir vom Paris Boutik Team gesagt, dass das Fenster System so konstruiert wurde, dass man von außen nicht reingucken kann, solange man nicht die Nase an die Scheibe presst – was nicht oft passiert. Mein House Sitte hat wohl vergessen mir das mitzuteilen.
